Aono Marine Group began its journey in 1894, when founder Shigematsu Aono started by supplying goods to workers at the Besshi Copper Mine. Since then, we have cherished our close ties with the local community, growing steadily with a focus on logistics. Today, we operate on a global scale. History
Aono Marine Group was founded in 1894 by Shigematsu Aono, who established the "Aono Shipping Store" in Kaneko Village, Niihama County, Ehime Prefecture, to supply essential goods to the workers at the Besshi Copper Mine. Since then, we have expanded our business alongside the development of the local community, building a legacy of over 130 years across five generations.
Founded in 1894 by Shigematsu Aono. In the beginning, goods were supplied to the Besshi Copper Mine. As a pioneer in the transportation of inorganic chemicals and tank transport, we established a strong presence in the industry.
During the Taisho era, the company focused on developing tank vessels, improving technology in collaboration with Sumitomo Fertilizer Manufacturing, and grew to enable the large-scale transport of sulfuric acid.
During the turbulent pre-war period, the company faced numerous challenges, including the requisition of vessels and transport restrictions by the government. We also ventured into barge transport and worked to expand our business even during wartime.
With its new beginning as an incorporated company, Aono Marine advanced innovations such as diversifying transported cargo, popularizing small steel vessels, and constructing steel ships, significantly expanding its organizational foundation and transportation capacity.
In the 1960s, despite a recession in the cargo shipping industry, we achieved growth and improved quality. By responding to changes in the domestic shipping industry and establishing our ten guiding principles to clarify our corporate stance, we also enhanced our reliability.
In the 1970s, we overcame challenges such as the oil crisis of 1973-74 and the closure of the Besshi Copper Mine, strengthening our position in the domestic shipping business. We devoted efforts to nurturing young talent and further expanded our business foundation for a new era.
Moving into more recent decades, the Aono Marine Group has made progress in passing the baton to the next generation. President Tadashi Aono has driven reforms suited to the new era, and proactively expanded our fleet capacity, aiming to grow the company into a comprehensive logistics provider.
After the war, we began rebuilding with five tank vessels for sulfuric acid transport. Overcoming the challenges of wartime, we devoted ourselves to resuming operations. We paved the way for a fresh start.
During the recession following the bubble economy's collapse, amid falling stock prices, the end of the "55-year political system," the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, and successive financial institution failures, Aono Marine celebrated its 100th anniversary by actively promoting business diversification.
During Japan's "Lost 30 Years" of economic stagnation, the Lehman Shock and Great East Japan Earthquake occurred. Amid global crises including the transition from Heisei to Reiwa era, the COVID-19 pandemic, Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and Middle East conflicts, Aono Marine, under Chairman Tadashi Aono and President Tsutomu Aono, enhanced its ocean-going fleet and fully entered international shipping.
