Introduced a ship safety management system based on
the International Safety Management (ISM) Code

Many of the recent maritime accidents have been caused by human error. In response, the focus has shifted from traditional safety measures, which primarily address the hardware of ships such as hull improvements and equipment upgrades, to safety measures from the human factors or 'soft' perspective. This shift has been globally recognized, and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has been examining the 'Human Element.' As a result, it was decided to establish international standards for ship operation management systems to enhance the safety of ship operations. In October 1993, the IMO Assembly adopted the ISM Code (International Safety Management Code). Following this, in May 1994, the 'International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea' (SOLAS) was amended, and the code became mandatory for passenger ships, tankers, and other vessels starting from July 1, 1998. Furthermore, in November 1995, the IMO Assembly adopted guidelines to ensure globally standardized implementation of the code.

Achieved Highest Rating of 5 Stars in the Coastal Ship Energy Efficiency Rating System

The Korei Maru, which entered service in December 2019, achieved the highest rating of five stars in the Energy Efficiency Rating System. This vessel is designed with a strong focus on environmental considerations from the planning stages, going beyond the adoption of partial energy-saving technologies previously used. We are working to reduce environmental impact through both hardware and software measures.

The Domestic Ship Energy Efficiency Rating System is a program by the Maritime Bureau of Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism. It evaluates the CO2 emission reduction rate (carbon-saving effect) of ships based on energy-saving and CO2-reduction measures. The results are represented as a rating system.

Recognition of the Korei Maru’s Energy-Saving Efforts: Recipient of the FY2022 Minister’s Award for Outstanding Environmental Conservation Efforts in Transportation

Aono Marine Co., Ltd. was honored with the FY2022 “Minister’s Award for Outstanding Environmental Conservation Efforts in Transportation”. This prestigious award, presented annually by the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism, recognizes businesses that actively engage in environmental conservation activities and achieve remarkable results. The reason behind Aono Marine receiving this honor lies in its advanced initiatives aimed at energy savings and CO2 reduction, starting with the introduction of the liquid chemical Tanker Korei Maru.

The Korei Maru is a highly energy-efficient ship meticulously designed from the planning stages to reduce environmental impact. Energy savings have been targeted for both hardware and software aspects, including hull design, high-efficiency propulsion systems, the introduction of optimal ship allocation systems, and the adoption of LED lighting onboard. Through these efforts, the company has made significant achievements, such as receiving a five-star highest rating from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism’s “Coastal Ship Energy Conservation Rating System”, and achieving a 26.09% reduction in CO2 emission rates.

Moreover, Aono Shipping is advancing multi-faceted environmental conservation measures, including the introduction of slow steaming, and is expanding its initiatives in collaboration with local communities and business partners. Aono Marine will continue its challenge to further reduce environmental impact and lead the future of the maritime industry towards the realization of a sustainable society.
